From the Classroom

Term 6 - 30/6/26 - What a week!

On Tuesday we went to Wingham Wildlife Park for the day.  We visited the animals and enjoyed seeing Try, the tiger, who Mrs Elmes adopted for us at the beginning of the year.  We also stopped at the dinosaur section to imagine what Mary Anning must have felt like when she discovered fossils and bones.  We also stopped for a quick visit to the park before we came home.  Thank you to Mrs Harper, Mrs Faulkner, Mrs Haynes, Mrs Griffen and Mrs Santer for all their help today.  It was great fun.

On Wednesday we made the classroom into a Victorian school room.  We had hand and nail inspections, Mrs Harper made sure we were listening and standing or sitting up straight and Mrs Elmes taught us from a chalkboard.  We did not enjoy writing on chalkboards as it was messy and when we ran out of room we had to rub it out and start again!  We found lessons boring as we did not have things to look at, no manipulatives to help us in maths and we had to stand and repeat things by rote.

We enjoyed playing with the hoops, balls and cups and playing hopscotch though whole class PE was not so much fun.

In the afternoon Mrs Faulkner took us to visit Dunks School Room and we were shocked at how small it was.  The girls were not happy that the school was only for boys!  We talked about what life was like for children and decided that it was hard and that we are so lucky to have the things we have now; not just toys but how we live now and how our homes are set up.

When we came back we tried our hand at some sewing.

Thank you again to Mrs Harper, Mrs Faulkner, and Mrs Santer for all their help today.

This week has also been careers week so we have had some visitors

On Monday PC Graham came to see us.  He is a Traffic Police Officer and he talked to us about his job, what he has to wear, how to keep ourselves safe and we also were lucky enough to see his traffic car.

On Thursday we had a visit from Hawkhurst Fire Crew and Watch Leader Marco talked to us about their job, what they wear and of course we got to see the fore engine and the hosepipes!

On Friday we had a visit from a local Paramedic who talked to us about their job and what they have to carry with them.

Term 4 - Week 4

We have had a very busy week.

To begin with we have started working on our book Oliver's Vegetables by Vivian French.  We spent time finding out what the vegetables from the story felt like, looked like and smelt like.  After that we began to write about a vegetable of our choice using adjectives and connectives.

We also had a visit from Hudson's mum who works at Linda Pope Opticians.  We have been looking at our senses in science and drawing our facial features in art so we asked Hannah if she would come along and talk about eyes with the children.  She brought resources for the children to explore and they had great fun using them.  They particularly enjoyed using the giant eye the team at the opticians had made.  Thank you so much for coming!

In maths we have been having great fun with practical maths.  We have been working on on measuring with a ruler and recording centimetres.

and capacity.

Term 2 - Week 8

We finished off a very busy term with our Christmas party.  We would like to thank everyone who helped supply the food and  we would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2026.

Term 2 - Week 7

We have had such a busy time rehearsing and performing our KS1 Nativity this term and this week we performed Jesus' Christmas Party to our families and friends.  Mrs Elmes and Mrs Harper were so proud of us because we have worked our socks of and sung our hearts out.  We hope you enjoyed it.

We also completed an experiment to find out the difference between plasticity (when an objects shape can be changed but it does not return to its original shape) and elasticity (when an object can be stretched but it returns to its original shape).  The first experiment involved us doing a fair teat by dropping a variety of balls from the same height and recording our findings.  The second experiment involved comparing a variety of materials to see which objects had elasticity and which ones did not.

We have been creating sculptures in art and DT this term which the boys decided to develop in their "exploring time" on Friday.  They created this collaborative sculpture and were so proud of the final result.

Term 2 - Week 4

The hard work and fun continues.  Lately we have completed another DT challenge to design and make a sandwich.  We had lots of different ingredients to put in our sandwich.  We invented some new combinations which would give and sandwich bar a run for their money.

We have also continued exploring numbers and working on how many different ways we can make a number using diennes and the part part whole model.

We have also enjoyed a break from number work to explore how to measure things using different resources and learning how to read a ruler.

Term 2 - Week 1 - Week Beg - 27.10.25

We have been working so hard this week.  We have started  new topic in History finding out about the History of Toys from the last 100 years to now.  We had a selection of old games and toys to explore.  We thought about how they were used, what they were made from and would we play with them today!  Did you have any of these when you were little?

We have also started a new science topic on Everyday Materials and have been exploring the textures of different materials and objects.

Welcome to Red' Class page

When we have some class activities to show you, we will put the links or pages here.

Term 1 - What a busy time we have had!

We have been so busy in year 1!  So far we have been working on Numbers within 10 and revising some of the skills we learnt in EYFS.  We are practising forming our numerals correctly, learning how to use a 10 frame to calculate our answers, ordering our numbers correctly and thinking about the maths vocabulary more, fewer and the same as.  We love practical maths and using lots of different manipulatives in our work.  We also enjoyed showing Mrs Elmes our skills in pattern making.

We have also been working on our understanding of how sentences are constructed.  We are learning about common nouns, proper nouns and verbs.  We have completed lots of different activities to help us with our learning

Mrs Elmes also tells us we are the neatest artists she has ever seen!  We left no paint on the cloths, our aprons or our hands!!
