What is the Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium is a government initiative that targets extra money at pupils from deprived backgrounds. Research shows that pupils from deprived backgrounds underachieve compared to their non-deprived peers.
Currently, the premium is worth £1320 and goes to pupils who are currently on Free School Meals (FSM) or have been registered for (FSM) in the past six years, children in care, adopted children and service children also continue to qualify for the Pupil Premium.
The Premium is provided to enable these pupils to be supported. The Government considers the above groups as indicators of deprivation, and has provided a fixed amount of money for schools per pupil based on the number of pupils registered for FSM over a rolling six year period. This fixed amount of money is expected to increase every year for the course of this current Parliament. At Hawkhurst we will be using the indicator of those eligible for FSM as well as identified vulnerable groups as our target children to ‘close the gap’ regarding attainment.

How will the impact of Pupil Premium Funding be measured?
At Hawkhurst CE Primary School we regularly assess pupils using NTS. Termly assessments allow us to gauge attainment and progress and termly pupil progress reviews allow us to identify any areas of need, support and appropriate intervention.
Our spending is carefully planned in line with whole school improvement to ensure we are getting maximum impact from the money allocated. his means we make informed decisions based on the following criteria:

Spending should be directly linked to gaps in attainment.

Data should be updated regularly and used to inform interventions and support.

All teaching should be good or better.

All teachers will be aware of who their pupil premium and vulnerable pupils are to ensure they are making progress.

All teachers will attend termly pupil progress reviews and discuss each child. Interventions will be reviewed and provision maps updated accordingly.

Assessment data for pupil premium children will be looked at three times a year in comparison to non pupil premium children.

All pupil premium funding will be used to support pupil premium children regardless of which ability group they are in.

We have bought into a new assessment package this year which will help us to highlight gaps quickly and put interventions in place.
