Our Curriculum at Hawkhurst C.E. Primary School
At Hawkhurst CEP School, everything we do is underpinned by our core values:
— Reverence — Koinonia — Forgiveness — Friendship — Endurance —
We believe in developing and delivering a curriculum that is broad, balanced and above all meaningful to our school community. In collaborating with our stakeholders we have planned for a wealth of learning opportunities to prove our children with a robust education in curriculum subjects, a keen sense of themselves and their local community and the skills to prepare them for life beyond Hawkhurst Primary School. We achieve this through careful planning for skills progression through termly topics in each year group, engaging enrichment activities and whole-school projects to explore, work together and celebrate our learning. Please click on individual class pages to find out more.
As a maintained school in England we follow the statutory National Curriculum (2014). On the basis of Key Stages, this sets out the subject content that should be taught to all pupils.
Our curriculum is balanced across the required subjects and promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils. It prepares our pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they will encounter later in life. We make provision for personal, social, health and economic education through the PSHE lessons provided for each year group.

Each subject has a programme of study which sets out the matters, skills and processes to be taught at each Key Stage. At Hawkhurst C.E. Primary School, the objectives of all programmes of study have been allocated to each year group in Key Stages 1 and 2 to produce a curriculum overview for the year group. Teachers are given the flexibility to plan their teaching in order to teach the specified curriculum for their year group. They select a topic title for each term and plan their teaching to cover all the specified objectives on the curriculum overview by the end of the academic year. An example of the topics planned to cover the teaching of the objectives for Key Stage 1, on a two year cycle, is included on this website.
For each class are published on the school website so that parents are able to see what will be covered by each class during each of the six terms.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is based upon the EYFS statutory framework document and supported by Development Matters, which is non-statutory guidance material for the implementation of the statutory requirements of the EYFS.
The programme of study for Religious Education is prescribed by the Diocese of Canterbury and an overview is displayed on this website. The Early Years Foundation Stage programme of study can be accessed from the website of The Diocese of Canterbury.
Hawkhurst C of E Primary School uses the “Read Write Inc” phonics scheme. Pupils in EYFS and KS1 receive a daily a daily phonics lesson of 30 minutes. Assessment is carried out every six weeks and groupings of pupils are altered according to progress made. The impact of the RWI scheme is that the majority of pupils have completed the scheme by the end of KS1.
